Etymology of Weft
The words woof and weft derive ultimately from the Old English word wefan, "to weave." It has given rise to the expression "woof and warp,” meaning literally a fabric (the warp being the lengthwise threads, under and over which the side to side threads—the woof—are woven).
Many of the terms used in modern-day sewing, embroidery, knitting, or other mechanical/technical aspects of the fashion, design, clothesmaking, weaving, or textile industry come from old English or similarly historical terms; as that is the center of which the beginnings of "fancier" clothing -- i.e., not simply "practical" -- originated.
